The public is invited to an exhibition by Tunxis photography instructors Arthur Simoes and Jessica Somers showing in the Barnes Franklin Art Gallery at Tunxis Community College, March 24-April 15. The opening reception is Tuesday, March 24, 4-7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
Somers credits her interest in photography to her grandfather. As a young child she spent evenings by his side as he developed thousands of photos in a bathroom converted to a makeshift darkroom. Her portfolio Bend So Not to Break, an exploration of the self, examines the struggle and balance between the choices one makes and the uncontrollable circumstances that intervene with these choices. “I construct each tableau using a range of individual prop-symbols illustrating the way life can lead us and my search for contentment,” said Somers.
A graduate of Albertus Magnus College with a bachelor’s of fine arts degree with a minor in English, Somers received an M.F.A. in photography from The Hartford Art School. Her work has been exhibited regionally and appears in The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes by Christopher James.
Simoes of West Hartford is a self-taught commercial and fine art photographer and educator. “I have often been overheard telling my students that the first photography class I ever attended was one I taught,” said Simoes. For the past eighteen years, Simoes’ fine art works have been exhibited extensively throughout the Northeast and his commercial work has appeared in Connecticut Magazine, Northeast Magazine and ESPN Magazine.
Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and by appointment. For more information, call 860.773.1621 or email William Kluba at email@example.com.
