Join Tunxis faculty, Lynn Laskowski, associate professor of biology and Dr. Fran Coan, associate professor of history for a presentation exploring the medical dictionaries once owned by Mark Twain.  “Mark Twain and the Travelling Tome: Tracing the Ownership of the James Medical Dictionaries” will be presented on Tuesday, April 28 from 7-8:30 pm at in the former Library on the Tunxis campus. It is important for students to know about the upcoming National Alcohol Screening Day.  As part of the program, students can complete a brief, written screening test, receive educational information and talk one-on-one with a health professional   for FREE.

Tour the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art

The Early Childhood Education Club
Is pleased to invite all Tunxis students on a trip to The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Amherst, Massachusetts.
“Our mission is to inspire, especially in children and their families, an appreciation for and an understanding of the art of the picture book.  In fulfilling our mission, we aspire to build bridges to an appreciation of art of every kind and to provide an enriching, dynamic, and supportive context for the development of literacy.”
When:  Friday, April 17, 2009
Time:  Leave Tunxis at 10:00 am.  Return to Tunxis at 4:00 pm
Cost:  $15.00 for bus.  $5.00 admission to museum.  Total:  $20.00
What will we do at the Museum?  The museum has graciously set up a self-guided tour which begins at 11:30 am and lasts for approximately 2 hours.  The tour takes participants through the entire museum.  It ends at the studio in which participants can create to their hearts’ content.
Lunch:  Each participant is required to bring a brown bag lunch and drink.  We have reserved table space in the Café.

Service Learning – Civic Engagement in the Community College

On April 17, 2009, Tunxis Community College will host a regional one-day workshop designed to support efforts to establish service-learning programs and strengthen existing programs in the community college. This workshop will feature a keynote presentation by Dr. Donna Killian Duffy, author of Service-Learning Course Design for Community Colleges.The workshop will provide attendees with the opportunity to engage service learning practitioners in discussions about community partnerships, curriculum integration and how to determine the level of civic engagement in an organization.

The Celebration of Womanhood Club and Tunxis Library are sponsoring “Music on the House”: an evening of poetry and music in Rooms 6-127 and 6-128.  Debbie Rossel, local singer/songwriter and Tunxis Instructor provides music from 6-7 pm and Fine Line Poets, an all-women poetry troupe, shares their work from 7-8 pm.  Refreshments will be served.
