Poetry Reading With Steve Straight

Tunxis invites the community to a poetry reading with Steve Straight, this year’s touring poet for the Connecticut Poetry Circuit, on Thursday, October 31, from 1-2:30 p.m. in Founders Hall. The event is part of an ongoing Tunxis Humanities Series offered throughout the year. There will be music and light refreshments.
Straight is the author of two full-length collections of poetry, most recently “The Almanac” (Curbstone/Northwestern University Press, 2012). His previous collection, “The Water Carrier” (Curbstone, 2002), was featured on the nationally syndicated radio program “The Writer’s Almanac with Garrison Keillor.”
For many years Straight directed the Connecticut Poetry Circuit, and the Seminar Series for the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. He has given workshops on writing and teaching throughout the East Coast and in Ireland. In 1998 he was named a Distinguished Advocate for the Arts by the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. He is a professor of English and director of the poetry program at Manchester Community College.

Tunxis Community College Foundation invites the community to its annual economic breakfast “Reinventing Health Care,” an informative discussion about the ever-changing U.S. health care system, on Thursday, Oct. 31, 8:30-10 a.m. at the Farmington Club. Keynote is Mark Bertolini, chairman, CEO and president of Aetna, Inc. Proceeds from the fundraising breakfast will support student scholarships and special projects at Tunxis Community College.

New, returning and transfer students are invited to a Majors Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. in the Main Administration Building Hallway.
The Open House will provide information on over 60 degree and certificate programs offered at Tunxis. Those who attend will also be able to find out about financial aid, admissions, and  transfer programs. Campus tours begin at 4 and 5 p.m., starting in the cafeteria.

NYC Bus Trip— “Don Quijote”

Tunxis students, faculty and the community are invited to attend a non-guided trip to New York City to see “Don Quijote,” (“Don Quixote”) a play in Spanish, on Sat., Oct. 26, at the Teatro Repertorio Español. Tickets (non-refundable) are $30 each and include the play and round trip bus fare from Tunxis. Free English and Spanish subtitle monitors are available at the theater.
Those attending must purchase tickets in advance and should meet at the bus in the Tunxis parking lot by 7:45 a.m. Passengers will be dropped off at the theater at 138 East 27th Street, and will return on their own to the Teatro Repertorio Español by 2:30 p.m. for the 3 p.m. show. Participants will have free time from 4:40-5:45 p.m., and the bus will depart the theater at 6 p.m. for arrival at Tunxis around 8:30 p.m. Please contact Lisa Celona at 860.773.1604 or Lcelona@tunxis.edu for more information. Tickets can be purchased from Celona or the Tunxis faculty secretaries by paying in cash or by check payable to Tunxis Community College. The public is invited to view “Synaptic Plasticity” a collection of new paintings by Mari Skarp-Bogli, in the Wallace Barnes and Barbara Hackman Franklin Art Gallery at Tunxis through Nov. 14. The community is invited to enjoy refreshments at an opening reception on Oct. 21 from 4-7 p.m.

National Domestic Violence Display on View

The Clothesline Project, a display which has been presented nationally to increase awareness of domestic violence, will be on view October 21-25 at Tunxis in the Administration Building hallway to commemorate National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
T-shirts on the line are hand-decorated by survivors with their sentiments and messages, as well as by friends and families of survivors and victims, who have felt the impact of violence.
The Clothesline Project presents itself as the first international movement of its kind, providing a medium for educating the public about the magnitude of the problem of violence against women, while promoting healing and social change.
The display is on loan from the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence. For those who would like to decorate a shirt  to donate to the permanent collection, please bring it to faculty office # 36.
