Central Sterile Processing Technicians are responsible for the sanitation and packaging of surgical instruments in hospitals, surgical centers and clinics. Whether you are looking to begin your career in health care or prepare for the Central Sterile Processing Technician national certification exam, this course may be for you. This 15-week program covers anatomy and physiology; microbiology and infection control; decontamination and sterilization processing; and how to handle, care for, and identify surgical instruments. The course includes clinical exposure to Central Sterile Processing Department. *Medical terminology and hospital setting experience are suggested but not required. Course fee does not include national certification exam. Students must have their book for the first class.

Program Information

Thank you for your interest in the Certified Nurse Aide Program at Tunxis Community College!  This program has been approved by the Connecticut Department of Public Health. Upon completion, graduates are eligible to be listed on the Connecticut Nurse Aide Registry.  The 100-hour program is held over a 12-week period, and offered days, evenings and Saturdays.  Each clinical is limited to 8 students who are accepted on a first come, first served basis.  Classroom instruction is held at the college; clinical groups are held at Ingraham Manor.


Program Requirements

You must be at least 17 years old and complete the following:

  • Mail or bring the application and forms to Continuing Education at Tunxis Community College, 271 Scott Swamp Road, Farmington, CT  06032.

Your application will then be forwarded to the Allied Health Coordinator for consideration. Upon acceptance, you will be notified in writing and given further instructions to complete your enrollment.


Once you are accepted, the tuition must be paid to the College within five business days of notification.  Refunds may be obtained ONLY if your written withdrawal is received by the Continuing Education Office three business days prior to the mandatory orientation session.


Your tuition includes malpractice insurance, (personal health insurance is recommended in case of injury or exposure), administrative fee, books, uniform, Essential Job Skills course, state certification examination, and Registry fee.


Uniform

Uniforms are to be worn at all times (both classroom and clinical) except the mandatory session.  See Associated Costs sheet (page 2 of the application packet) for details.


Each student accepted into the program must have a health examination along with a TB (PPD) test. Students born after January 1, 1957 must also have documentation of Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR). See the application packet for details. No one can be permitted to participate in the clinical portion without these requirements.

This review may be for you if:

  • your CNA certification has expired and you wish to re-take the state competency exam;
  • you recently completed a CNA program and want to review before the state exam;
  • you failed the written and/or skills portion of the competency exam, and wish to review before re-taking the test;
  • you have successfully completed a course or courses comprising not less than 100 hours of theoretical and clinical instruction in an approved LPN or RN education program.

The written review covers geriatric resident care and the role of the CNA. The skills session provides CNA skills practice in a supervised lab.

For allied health professionals looking to add to their skill set, with classroom and hands-on experience. Learn basic skills in administering a 12-lead EKG, including cardiac anatomy and function; appropriate skin preparation; proper lead placement; and identification of P, Q, R, S, and T wave forms. Learn to recognize a normal versus abnormal electrocardiogram, prevent artifacts, and adapt to unusual patient situations. Also learn pulse oximetry measurement. Class covers sensor placement and pulse correlation techniques to measure oxygen saturation accurately. Please note: This course does not prepare you to become an EKG technician. It is appropriate for nurse aides, medical assistants and those preparing for patient care technician positions (PCT).

An Affordable Way to Pursue Your Career!

Program Information

Classes start every spring and fall!

Thank you for your interest in the Registered Medical Assisting (RMA) Program at Tunxis Community College!  This 720-hour, 10-month accredited program approved by the American Medical Technologists, runs every Spring and Fall semester. The program is limited to 24 students who are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to sit for the American Medical Technologists’ RMA National Examination.  Classroom instruction and lab groups are held at the college; lab groups are limited to 12 students. Clinical internships are held at physicians’ offices and clinics within our college service area.


Program Requirements

You must be at least 18 years old and complete the following:

  • Fill out the MA Application
  • Submit a copy of your high school diploma or GED
  • Mail or bring the application and forms to Continuing Education, Tunxis Community College, 271 Scott Swamp Road, Farmington, CT  06032.
It is the applicant’s responsibility to make sure all materials have been received.  Only completed applications will be reviewed.

Your application will be forwarded to the Allied Health Coordinator for consideration.  If accepted, you will be notified in writing and given further instructions to complete your enrollment.


Required Uniform

  • Ceil blue scrub top and pants
  • White lab coat
  • Black sneakers, shoes or Crocs (cannot be open-toed)
  • Watch with a second hand

Tuition Payment

Once you are accepted, tuition must be paid to the College within five business days of notification.  Refunds may be obtained only if your written withdrawal is received by the Continuing Education Office five business days prior to the Mandatory Orientation Session.

Your tuition includes the cost of malpractice insurance, textbooks, uniforms, and National Examination fee.


Health Requirements

Each student accepted into the program must have a health examination along with required immunizations.  See the program cost sheet for details.  No one can be permitted to participate without these requirements.

This program contains an online portion.  An internet access point, like the Tunxis Library or your home computer, is required for successful completion.

Designed for entry-level students or for certified nurse aides or LPNs who want to add to their skill set. The Patient Care Technician Certificate can help you advance your skills, increase your earning power, and  provide you with opportunities within the health care sector. PCTs are valued members of the health care team in hospitals, physicians’ offices, clinics and long-term care facilities. They provide direct patient care including but not limited to: obtaining vital signs; turning and repositioning; bathing; patient transfers; patient care set-up; performing EKGs and phlebotomy; performing basic life saving techniques.

To earn the PCT/PCA Certification from Tunxis, you must successfully complete the following:

  • Certified Nurse Aide program, or provide  proof of current CNA certification or LPN licensure
  • Phlebotomy Technician program (must be taken at Tunxis)
  • EKG Skills course (must be taken at Tunxis)
  • CPR/BLS for Allied Health course (must be taken at Tunxis)

Program Information

This comprehensive, 60-hour course will prepare students for an entry-level position in a community, hospital or long-term care setting. It is also an excellent review for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) national certification exam. Topics will include medical terminology specific to the pharmacy; reading and interpreting prescriptions; and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculation; I.V. flow rate; drug compounding; and dose conversion. Dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control, billing, and insurance reimbursement will also be discussed.
Anyone convicted of a felony is not permitted to sit for the exam.

Course Prerequisite: Fluency in basic math and algebra is required to perform necessary calculations, or complete Medical Math from ed2go.com/tunxis.

Thank you for your interest in Certified Phlebotomy Technician training at Tunxis Community College.  This program is approved by the National Health Career Association. It provides approximately 160 hours of training, including classroom and a hand-on laboratory.  Enrollment is limited to 15 students accepted on a first come, first served basis. Course content includes: basic aspects of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, venipuncture, specimen collection procedures, safety and universal precautions, common laboratory tests with clinical significance to body systems and disease processes, and laboratory equipment. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to sit for the National Certification examination (administered at the college), as well as a clinical internship.


Program Requirements:

You must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED, and complete the following:

This course is designed to prepare individuals to work as a caregiver in the home setting. You will train to provide basic care skills to clients according to the skill criteria for nurse aides in the state of Connecticut. The content includes; assisting with activities of daily living, infection control, common chronic diseases, emergency care, caring for the entire person, household chores, escorting to appointments, companionship, reporting significant health changes, importance of communication, environmental hazards and safety, ethics and personal rights.

If you are caring for a spouse, parent, child, friend or client, your life is a balancing act. You want to provide the best care possible. Like many caregivers, you have other responsibilities, including a job and family. This 12-hour course will provide you with valuable information on adapting the home, diet and eating, mental and social well-being, aiding mobility, personal care skills, individualized routines including likes and dislikes, emergencies, legal and financial matters as well as valuable resources. Caring for the caregiver will be discussed along with support services.
