Commencement FAQ

+When and where will the ceremony be held?
Wednesday, June 1, 2016 on campus in the courtyard, rain or shine.

+Do I have to attend commencement ceremonies?
Attendance is not mandatory. However, we encourage graduates to attend, as it would allow family, friends, faculty and staff the privilege of recognizing your achievement.

+Will there be a rehearsal for the ceremony?
No. Graduates will be informed by mail when and where to report for line-up.

+What time should I arrive for the ceremony?
Graduates are to arrive no later than 5:30 p.m. and meet in the 200 building for lineup and instructions regarding the ceremony.

+How are we lined up for the ceremony?
Graduates will line up according to program. Degree and certificate recipients line-up separately. If a graduate is receiving a degree and a certificate or two degrees and/or certificates, they are to line up with the first-degree program alphabetically. Upon presentation of the graduates, all programs are announced.

+How long is the actual ceremony?
Commencement is approximately 1.5 hours long. The ceremony starts promptly at 6:30 p.m.

+Where do I park?
Tunxis Parking Lot.

+What about my guests?
There is no limit to the number of guests you may bring to the ceremony as seating is on a first come, first serve basis. Guests should proceed directly to the courtyard via main entrances or proceed toward the Library and bear right. Printed invitations are complimentary and available at the Information Desk beginning the third week in April but are not necessary for attendance. We recommend that you ask one of your guests to hold any items you do not want to worry about during the ceremony such as a purse or jacket.

+Where and when do I get my cap and gown?
Graduates can pick up their cap and gown at the Tunxis Bookstore beginning in May (measurements are not necessary). There is no fee. For Bookstore hours, call 860.255.3454.

+How should the cap and tassel be worn?
The cap is placed squarely on the top of your head (not the back) and the tassel is placed to the RIGHT side of the cap.

+Where will my name appear in the program?
Your name will appear in alphabetical order first by degree, then program, then by name. Degree recipients appear first followed by certificate recipients.

+What about photographs?
Tunxis has arranged with Island Photography to take a picture of each graduating student on stage as he or she is handed their diploma cover and/or as they exit the stage. Proof(s) will be e/mailed. There is no obligation to order and proof(s) are yours to keep. For safety precautions, we ask family and friends not to stand in aisles to take pictures during commencement exercises. Aisles will be monitored.

+Is there a reception following the ceremony?
All graduates and their guests are invited to a reception where light refreshments will be served. Location will be announced following the ceremony.

+When will I receive my diploma?
At the ceremony, graduates receive a diploma cover. Diplomas may be available immediately following commencement exercises; please listen for an announcement. Graduates may also pick-up their diplomas at the Records Office during regular business hours. Please bring a form of identification with you. Diplomas are not mailed, they must be picked up.
