Why should I choose a major?

There are several good reasons to choose a major. First, in order to apply for Financial Aid, a student must be enrolled in a degree program. Also, there are many scholarships available to students who have declared a major. Once you are matriculated, you will be assigned to an advisor with expertise in your field, and you may also transfer in credits from other colleges. Studies show that students who enroll in a program – those with a goal- are more likely to remain in college and be successful.

What should I study?

Deciding what to study can be a difficult decision. Usually, your plan of study is based on the career choice you have made. If you are uncertain about your choice, you may want to take an interest survey to determine where your strengths and interests lie. Contact the Director of Career Services at KJames@tunxis.edu for information on the Strong Interest Inventory and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.

If you know what you would like to pursue, your academic advisor can get you started with the correct Plan of Study.

How do I know what classes to take?

The required courses for each degree and certificate program are listed in the Tunxis Community College Catalog and on individual MAT Guides.  The first step is taking the Placement Test for Math and English. This
will determine at which level you should begin your studies. Your advisor will help you interpret your test results and choose the
appropriate starting courses. Based on your individual academic needs, advisors will help you plan your course of study in your chosen area.

How do I schedule classes?

An academic advisor can assist you in scheduling classes. Each student is assigned a faculty advisor based on the Plan of Study they choose. You may contact your faculty advisor by checking their posted office hours in the Faculty Office area. If you are undecided on a major, you may contact the Advising Center at 860.773.1510 to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.

How do I purchase books?

Your textbooks may be purchased at the Tunxis Bookstore located adjacent to the cafeteria. Bring your class schedule with you, and you will be assisted in finding your books according to course number. You may also find a list of required texts on the Tunxis Bookstore site if you should choose to purchase your books online.
