Academic Support Center
Every Tunxis student is required to take placement testing for Math and English. The test is free, and it is used to properly place students in courses. Many classes have English or Math prerequisites, so the test insures that you are appropriately placed for maximum success.
Tutoring services are available to all registered students. The Academic Support Center provides peer and professional tutors primarily in the areas of math and science, but other subjects are available on an as needed basis. There is also an Online Tutoring Service available.
If you have a diagnosed learning disability or a physical disability, you may meet with a Learning Disabilities Specialist to obtain classroom accommodations. Documentation must be presented and assessed, and based on this information, the appropriate accommodations will be given. These may include extended time for testing, help with note taking, adaptive technologies and others. All information is confidential and faculty and staff are careful to maintain the students’ privacy.
The Academic Support Center offers a variety of workshops throughout the year to help students be successful. Some of these include time management, test taking and test anxiety, note taking and study skills. These may be arranged on an individual basis by contacting the Academic Support Center.
Academic Advising Center
A wide range of services are available to students through the Academic Advising Center. These include assistance with self-exploration, goal setting, decision making, problem solving and academic planning.
Students enrolled in specific programs are assigned a faculty advisor. Those who are non degree may meet with members of the Academic Advising Center staff for academic advising. Students may schedule an appointment by calling 860.773.1510. If you wish to choose a major or discuss transfer options, these services are also available.
There are a variety of services available to students dealing with careers. Resume writing, interest inventories, interviewing skills and other career related information can be accessed by contacting the Director of Career services at KJames@tunxis.edu
Tunxis Community College has articulation agreements with many colleges throughout Connecticut. If you are planning to transfer from Tunxis in the future, please make an appointment with our transfer counselor at Kpittman@tunxis.edu in order to prepare you for the most seamless transfer.
The Academic Advising Center provides a private environment in which students may discuss and explore attitudes, feelings and values in a non-judgmental manner. If more extensive therapy is needed, students will be referred to the appropriate community agencies. The Academic Advising Center also offers wellness programs throughout the year to help students deal with important life choices.
