Tunxis is participating in CT Publics Make a Difference Week, with several projects dedicated to serving the community Oct. 18-24, part of a larger initiative of all of Connecticut’s Public Higher Education.

Activities at Tunxis during the week included:

• A food drive to benefit Plainville Community Food Pantry. The Plainville Community Food Pantry, Inc. is a non-profit outreach agency that provides food, energy assistance, clothing, crisis intervention and referral services to individuals in need. Donation boxes are located outside of the faculty offices, Information desk, Library and across from the Academic Support Center at Tunxis.

• The Clothesline Project exhibit will be displayed in the main hall of the 100 Building Oct. 19-23. The Clothesline Project is to educate the public about the magnitude of the problem of violence against women and to testify to the impact violence has had on the individual, their family, and their friends. The Clothesline Project bears witness to victims’ courage and will to survive, as each shirt acts as a window into the painful life of the woman or child who has had to live with violence or died because of it. The Clothesline Project is brought to us through the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The exhibition is accepting decorated t-shirts which can be donated to the permanent collection. Please bring them to Faculty Office #36. For more information see http://www.clotheslineproject.org/ or visit them on Facebook.

• There will be a bake sale on Wed., Oct.21 from 10-2 in the 100 Building Main Lobby to benefit Kyla’s Kids Fund. Kyla was a Tunxis student who has tragically killed in 2014 in front of her children in a domestic violence murder-suicide by her husband.  The fund will help provide for her three children now and as they grow. Co-sponsored by: The Tunxis Human Services Program and the Tunxis Human Services Club.

Bake Sale to benefit Tunxis students in need on Oct. 19 starting at 9 a.m. All money raised will be used to purchase gift cards for gas and food. The cards will be distributed by the Counseling Office to students who demonstrate need.
