Tunxis Community College Foundation invites the public to “Compete Connecticut: Live, work or learn; your role in a more competitive community” at its Annual Economic

Conference and Networking Breakfast on November 18, from 8-10:15 a.m. at the Hartford Marriott Farmington.

Proceeds from the breakfast will support scholarships and projects for students at Tunxis Community College in Farmington.

The keynote speaker is Bonnie Stewart, vice president of government and public affairs and general counsel for Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA). Stewart manages CBIA’s government affairs and public affairs staff and represents business interests and tax policy issues before the state legislature and various state agencies. She also leads the association’s Government Affairs Council, Taxation and Finance Committee, and Monday Morning Group.

Stewart joined CBIA in 1988 as an attorney specializing in corporate governance and liability matters. She has represented the business community on a variety of issues on both the legislative and regulatory fronts.

Key issue areas for Stewart have included business taxes, labor and employment, healthcare and liability. Stewart has served on numerous task forces, councils and boards studying such matters as property taxes, medical privacy, numerous labor and employment law matters, and non-compete agreements.

Before joining CBIA, Stewart worked for the office of the Connecticut Attorney General. She received her J.D. from Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord, New Hampshire and her bachelor’s degree in science from the University of Connecticut.

Tunxis student Kathryn Plourde, a recipient of the Foundation’s Hartford Foundation for Public Giving Scholarship, will also speak. In addition to her Tunxis studies, Plourde works full time for Filomeno & Company, P.C. as supervisor of an administrative team of four. She leads the Firm’s “50 Acts of Kindness” campaign as the director of culture. Plourde, who resides in West Hartford, has an 11-year-old son, Ryan.
