New Program Helps Prepare Students for Global Economy

Tunxis Community College will offer a new “E-Commerce” associate’s degree program starting in Fall semester 2010.

The new program provides students with skills in business, marketing and technology necessary to start and operate their own e-business enterprise, or work for companies that engage in e-commerce and manage operations with electronic networks.

“There is a need for employees with an understanding of technology and electronic retailing who can use these skills in innovative ways to reach customers,” said Andre Blaszczynski, coordinator for the business administration programs at Tunxis.

“Online retail in the United States is projected to grow to $335 billion by 2012 as companies expand their presence in e-commerce to remain competitive,” said Blaszczynski. “Companies are also increasingly using electronic networks to manage their operational processes on a global scale for resource and components procurement, distributed manufacturing, and distribution and inventory management, among others,” he added. “This electronic network based economy will be a major source of future employment and economic growth.”

Graduates of the e-commerce program who wish to pursue bachelor’s degrees can continue their studies in e-commerce or go on to study in college business or management programs. The specialized e-commerce courses may also be used as electives for those who choose other business administration concentrations at Tunxis.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, business is among the top three postsecondary degrees in greatest demand, a fact reflected in Tunxis’ own enrollment, where business programs represent the third largest field of study.

Responding to workforce needs and expanding career opportunities, Tunxis offers over 60 associate’s degrees and certificates, with six business administration concentrations including the e-commerce program. For more information on the e-commerce associate’s degree, email

Fall semester classes start August 26. For those new students interested in registering, please contact the Admissions Office at 860.773.1490. Tunxis is located at the junction of Routes 6 and 177 in Farmington.
