Basic CMYKTunxis Community College in Farmington has been ranked third in Connecticut in a 2013 Safety Rankings list by StateUniversity.com, and is the top ranked Connecticut public college on the list.

To compile the list, StateUniversity.com utilized Clery and FBI data from over 1,400 colleges and universities to assign the safety ratings, according to its website. The assigned ratings are based on criteria such as weapon occurrences, drugs, burglary, vehicle theft, arson, larceny, robbery, assault and other crimes.

“We take campus safety seriously and continuously work at creating a safe learning environment,” said Chuck Cleary, Tunxis dean of administration.

For the past three years Tunxis has held SWAT team drills with the Connecticut State Police and the North Central Municipal Emergency Services Team. The College’s Crisis Management and Behavioral Intervention Teams meet on a regular basis, and an emergency text message system is used to alert students of important notifications including weather-related delays and closings. Tunxis will also host its second annual Campus Health & Safety week starting October 7, one of several initiatives to promote ongoing safety awareness.
