Tunxis Community College is offering Motorcycle Rider Education courses starting this spring in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Office of Highway Safety, required as of 2011 for applicants to obtain a new motorcycle license.

The Tunxis classes, which run from April through October, can be completed in as little as three days or two weekends in Fairfield, Farmington and Stratford. Motorcycles are provided.

“Studies have shown that motorcycle rider training can reduce the chances of being in an accident,” said Angelo Santoro, Farmington site manager for the Tunxis Motorcycle Safety Program. “Since many riders are only on the road from May through October, courses are also a good refresher —they remind drivers to think about their riding skills and be more aware of road conditions and how to maneuver safely.”

Those who wish to sign up for motorcycle courses should hold a driver’s license or motorcycle permit and be physically able to operate a motorcycle. Students who successfully complete the course may also be eligible for a 10% insurance discount.

Classroom and on-cycle instruction for classes in Stratford will be held at the Moose Lodge on Dodge Avenue and Stratford Army Engine Plant. Fairfield courses take place at Sound Motor Sports and Jefferson Street Commuter Lot. Farmington courses are held on campus at Tunxis, located at the junction of Routes 6 and 177.

The Tunxis Motorcycle Safety Program is winner of the National Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Outstanding Community Training Sponsor Award.
