Tunxis Community College in Farmington prepares students for occupations as dental hygienists and dental assistants, with growing employment opportunities expected through 2020.

In a state-of-the-art, on-campus dental lab, dental students learn to accurately document patient conditions and provide professional care utilizing evolving technology while learning hands-on skills in community health care centers and clinics.

In the associate degree in dental hygiene program and dental assisting certificate, students have many opportunities to participate in community outreach projects on the local, national and international level, providing services to underserved populations including children, the elderly and those without dental insurance. Students of the dental hygiene program provide referrals and screenings for approximately 2,000 children in New Britain. The graduating class of 2015 has also provided dental hygiene services to 2,206 patients, over half of whom were seen at community clinics.

This fall, both programs successfully completed the Commission on Dental Accreditation site visit without any recommendations. Tunxis is the only public college in the state to provide a degree in dental hygiene.

The dental hygiene and dental assisting programs have special admissions requirements and application deadlines. The dental hygiene program application date has been extended to December 18 due to the holiday calendar. The deadline for dental assisting is April 15.
