Tunxis Community College student Cassandra King, of Bristol, received a scholarship from the New Britain Branch of AAUW to attend the 2011 National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL) held June 2-4 at University of Maryland, College Park.

“Cassandra displays the maturity, leadership, and sense of responsibility we look for in nominees,” said Susan Dantino, Tunxis grants officer, who nominated the general studies major for the scholarship. “She demonstrated leadership skills during her participation in a community service project with other Tunxis students on a Navajo Reservation in Utah, which was recognized by the Connecticut Department of Higher Education and Connecticut Commission on Community Service.”

King is one of 21 Connecticut college students who attended the two-day conference, which is designed to enhance the leadership skills of college women and to promote effectiveness in their work on campus and in the community. NCCWSL is sponsored by AAUW in collaboration with the National Student Affairs Professionals in Higher Education.

Formerly known as the American Association of University Women, AAUW is a nationwide network of more than 100,000 members and donors, 1,000 branches, and 500 college/university partners. The organization’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research, according to the AAUW web site.
