What is Service Learning?
Service learning is a method of teaching and learning that connects the classroom to the community through service.
Service learning helps students apply their classroom knowledge in support of their neighbors by addressing a community need. By becoming civically engaged, students build character, form a foundation for career goals, and become a part of civic solutions that improve the quality of life in a community.
Service learning can be applied across all subjects and disciplines, can involve a single student or groups of students, and can involve a wide variety of service projects within a community through partnerships with community based organizations, campus organizations, and Volunteers in Service to America (AmeriCorps VISTA).
How does a student benefit from Service Learning?
Service learning is learning in action, and provides academic recognition for services performed.
How does a community benefit from student service?
Service Learning engages students in focused solutions to issues which address the needs of underserved people in the community.
“I got to experience Navajo life, culture and arts first-hand and gained valuable skills along the way as I helped document aspects of their culture that
are in danger of extinction. I was able to put my knowledge to the test long before my career starts.”
General Studies Major
“I participated in oral health service learning projects where I was able to put my experience in the classroom to work in the community by helping underserved populations.”
