Degree Programs
At Tunxis, we understand that Computer Information Systems means many things to many people. Our degree options give you the flexibility to make your choices, meet your needs, and achieve your goals.
Computer Information Systems
This degree will provide you with the maximum flexbility and marketability. In addition to our core courses, students will take both programming and applications electives and directed electives of their choice. Students who complete this degree will have a variety of career options open to them.
Computer Programming Option
Designed for the problem-solver whose goal is to work as a programmer. Students will take courses in a variety of today’s programming languages, including C++, Visual Basic, and Java.
Network Administration Option
This degree is designed for the student who wants to work as a network administrator or technical support person. Students will work with a variety of network operating systems and will learn how to problem solve in a network business environment.
Honors Computer Science/Mathematics Program
The Honors Computer Science/Mathematics associate in science degree at Tunxis Community College transfers seamlessly to Central Connecticut State University. After two years at Tunxis, students who continue on to pursue a bachelor’s degree start preparing for entry-level careers as software engineers or math teachers.
Under the provisions of an approved articulation agreement with Central Connecticut State University, graduates of Tunxis Community College with a grade point average of 2.7 or better may enter CCSU’s School of Arts and Sciences at the junior level and apply all of their credits toward bachelor of science degrees in Computer Science Honors Program, Computer Science Alternative Program, or Mathematics for Secondary Teaching Certification.*
It is also appropriate for those who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Theoretical Math at Central. The CCSU Computer Science Honors program is fully accredited by the Computer Science Accreditation Board (CCSAB), now the Computing Accreditation Commission(CAC) of ABET, Inc.

B.S. in Computer Science These programs prepare students for careers in the fast-growing occupation of software engineering.
B.S. in Computer Science Honors Accreditated by ABET, Inc. B.S. in Computer Science/Alternative Program
B.S. in Mathematics for Secondary Teaching Certification* For those who plan to teach high school mathematics. *Requires admission to CCSU School of Education.
B.S. in Theoretical Mathematics Designed for students who would like to pursue careers in actuarial science or statistical analysis.

Central Connecticut State University is one of only a handful of colleges in Connecticut that offers an ABET-accredited computer science program.
Certificate Programs
Are you looking to change career paths? Enter the workforce quickly? Upgrade your skill set? The CIS program at Tunxis has three certificate programs to meet your needs.
Computer Programming Certificate
Provides the skills to solve problems in business, science, and mathematics utilizing object-oriented methodology and graphical user interface design. This certificate can lead to entry-level programming positions using C++, Visual Basic and /or Java.
Network Administration Certificate
Provides the skills in the areas of network design, local and wide area networks, network operating systems and networking administration. This certificate responds to the growing importance of networking in the business world.
Microcomputer Processing Certificate
Provides training in basic microcomputer applications such as word processing, spreadsheet applications, database applications and presentation graphics, as well as in networking and the Internet. Certificate can lead to entry-level positions in desktop support services including help desk and training positions, entry-level software maintenance, or entry-level network operating system support.

The Criminal Justice program is designed to instill students with a love of learning, a sensitivity to civic responsibility and community service, and an appreciation for human rights in a multicultural society.
A Rewarding Career
Law enforcement is among the areas of study in high demand identified by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). According to a 2005 AACC survey, law enforcement was the second most sought-after program among colleges surveyed.
At Tunxis, you will gain skills needed to move ahead in the field of criminal justice. GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in subject area. Two years of college teaching experience and/or related work experience preferred.
COMPENSATION: $4,416 to $4,752 per three (3) credit course*.   *Pay rate may be subject to change
EQUIVALENCIES: Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications as stated are encouraged to put in writing precisely how their background and experience have prepared them for the responsibilities of these positions, and provide appropriate references.
PART-TIME EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANTS AND CONTRACTUAL SERVICES
The following are examples of the types of positions and services that may be needed during the year. Academic Support Center Aides in subject areas such as Math, English, Reading, Writing, Testing Specialists and Assistants, Lab Assistants, Computer Specialists, Dental Hygiene/Assisting Education Assistants, and attending Dentists.
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: Hours per week and salary vary depending on the requirements of the position.
COMPENSATION: The fee for contractual services varies depending on the nature of the service.
