Spring 2021 Library Services:

While most of our services are available to faculty, staff and students virtually, our Library and Instructional Technology (LIT) Department will be open for limited services, operating by appointment only, for the Spring 2021 semester. Please review our services and book an appointment! Appointments are limited to one (1) booking, per service, per person, per day.

Unfortunately, our physical space and resources are not intended for students enrolled in LRON (Live Remote Online) courses. These courses require active engagement and participation, something that is not ideal in a Library. Alternatively, if you have your own laptop, you are welcome to find a quiet spot on campus (social distanced with a face mask) to participate in your LRON course. If not, you can reserve a time in the computer lab (you should bring your own ear buds.). Circulation

Circulation services, otherwise known as borrowing Library resources (books, DVD’s, calculators, etc.), unlike our other appointment-based services are not “bookable” services. Some items available for circulation can be retrieved digitally (viewed online). Physical items requests can be retrieved via curbside pick-up.

Computer, keyboard & mouse

Computer Use

Enrolled Tunxis Students along with Faculty & Staff may book an appointment to reserve a computer (Login to myCommNet required) for self-directed use (printer available). Technical and/or instructional support will be deferred to a virtual setting.

**Not intended for LRON courses (Live Remote Online) – you may use this space if studying quietly for the “online” portion of your course. The “Live Remote” portion of your course will require active engagement and is not something our space can accommodate at this time. Do you have a research assignment and don’t know where to begin?

The Library and Instructional Technology Department (LIT) is pleased to offer virtual (online) or telephone research appointments during this time of COVID closures to current Tunxis students, faculty and staff. You may book an appointment (Login to myCommNet required) to learn a new search technique or expand your knowledge with a 30-minute, one-on-one online or phone session with a librarian or staff member.

We offer help on the following topics:

    • Developing a search strategy (choosing relevant keywords, etc.)
    • Help locating specific sources (books, articles, etc.) for a paper, presentation or project
    • Using library research databases and catalogs
    • Citing sources properly in MLA, APA and Chicago

 

Textbook & Calculator

Reserve Items

Reserve items will only be handled by LIT staff. We have however digitized many of our popular textbooks on reserve for your convenience and safety. Please search for the title of your textbook here to see if it is available in digital format.

You will be asked to provide as much information about the reserve item, in advance, as you are able. If you are unable to provide us with chapter and page information for the title you are requesting, your ability to review the material for the entire duration of your reservation may be reduced.

If the textbook you are looking for has not been digitized, you may book an appointment (Login to myCommNet required) to come in and receive a print-out of your requested chapters of a textbook to view in the library only. Please note that you may not remove the print-out from the library.

 

Scanner

We have a scanner that will allow you to scan books, documents, images, and notes to your flash drive. Alternatively you may send the scanned document directly to your email.

If the item is a Library “Reserve” item, you will first need to schedule a booking for the Reserve item.

Enrolled Tunxis Students along with Faculty & Staff may book an appointment (Login to myCommNet required) for self-directed use of this scanner.

Study Space (For Individual Use Only)

Enrolled Tunxis Students may book an appointment (Login to myCommNet required) to use one of our study spaces. These spaces are limited and provide a single person with a table and chair in an open area. If your study needs require access to a computer, please use the “Computer Use” booking as an alternative.

*Group study areas are not available in the Library at this time.

Tunxis Faculty & Staff ONLY may book an appointment for the use of our LIT Lab (Login to myCommNet required). This lab space is equipped with a computer and scanner for self-directed use. Technical and/or instructional support will be deferred to a virtual setting.

 

Tunxis Community College - Library Stacks

Library Instruction Request – Faculty ONLY

Faculty may request a virtual instruction session with one of our Librarians by filling out the Library Instruction Request Form.

We offer instruction on the following topics:

  • Remote Research/Services/Website Overview
  • Choosing/Narrowing Topics and Finding Background Info
  • Search Strategies/Terms in Catalog/Databases/Web
  • Evaluating Sources
  • (existing) LibGuide orientation

Instruction sessions can be customized and will require that you provide us with additional information.
