Tunxis Community College in Farmington has spots available in its 10-month Registered Medical Assistant program that starts Sept. 14, one of several non-credit programs offered through Tunxis Workforce Development and Continuing Education to help meet demand in Connecticut for health care workers.

Medical assistants, who perform a variety of clinical and administrative functions in hospitals and physician’s offices, rank among the occupations expected to have a high growth rate in Connecticut through 2022, with projected job growth of 27%, according to the Connecticut Department of Labor. Those with formal training and certification have the best opportunities for employment.

Approved by the American Medical Technologists certification agency, the program provides hands-on skills in recording vital signs, taking medical histories, phlebotomy, pharmacology, assisting physicians during examinations, and performing basic laboratory tests, among others. A 200-hour clinical externship at area physicians’ office and clinics is also included.

The non-credit program runs through July 16, 2016 and is eligible for funding through the Workforce Investment Act by contacting a CT Works office. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to take the American Medical Technologists Registered Medical Assistant Certification Exam.
