Lina MatthewsTunxis Community College graduate Lina Matthews of Bristol was one of 12 outstanding students from the Connecticut Community Colleges to be named to the All-Connecticut Academic Team during a recognition ceremony held this spring at the State Capitol.

The All-Connecticut Academic Team recognizes the outstanding scholarly achievements and leadership accomplishments of students enrolled in Connecticut’s community and junior colleges. The students chosen for the state team also represented the state of Connecticut in the All-USA Academic Competition, sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa and USA Today.

“I had worked hard my whole time here, and had made Dean’s List and received scholarships, but this award was very special,” said Matthews, who received her degree in general studies on May 30.  “It was very gratifying to know faculty and administration recognized my academic achievement.”

Originally from Bosnia, Matthews came to the United States in 2008 as an au pair with hopes of a better future. Along the way, she married and decided to pursue a college degree. “I believe that if you work hard, the possibilities are endless,” said Matthews, who also received the President to President Scholarship, a renewable grant awarded to a high academic achieving transfer student. She was also a member of Phi Theta Kappa’s Alpha Iota Alpha chapter, and worked two part-time jobs while pursuing her associate degree.

Matthews will transfer to Central Connecticut State University where she will pursue a bachelor’s degree in biomolecular sciences as she prepares to go to medical school or pursue a career in the health care field. She is thankful for her Tunxis professors, and also her husband and family in Bosnia for helping her achieve her academic goals.

The ceremony was sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the official honor fraternity of two-year colleges and the largest honor society in American higher education; and the Board of Regents for Higher Education.
