Tunxis Community College hosted 24 students from Bristol and New Britain’s Boys and Girls Club on August 9 for a campus tour, and to learn about career pathways and the college’s new Advanced Manufacturing Technology programs, following visits to Farmington manufacturers CT Spring and Stamping and Trumpf.

During the tour of Tunxis, the students learned about a number of high-tech programs the college offers, shown with one of the Young Engineers program’s advisors (back right), Olusola Agboola, a graduate assistant at CCSU.

The 7th-through 9th-graders participated through Central CT State University’s Young Engineers Summer STEM Workforce Development program, as part of a new collaboration between the Connecticut State Colleges & Universities and the Bristol Boys and Girls Club, focused on workforce development and encouraging students to become interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) related careers.

“It’s important to give young learners opportunities such as this to explore high-tech career paths and help cultivate interest in STEM-related fields,” said Dr. James Lombella, President of Tunxis and Asnuntuck Community Colleges. “These are growing occupations our economy depends on, with salaries in many cases that are twice the national average.”

During their time at Tunxis, the young students learned about the college’s Machine Technology programs for careers in CNC and machine technologies, and Electro-Mechanical programs, which focus on repairing equipment, fixing electrical/mechanical issues, and creating manufacturing systems.

Offered through the College of Technology, college credits earned in the Advanced Manufacturing Technology programs can be applied to four-year degrees at other private and public universities in Connecticut. The College of Technology is a collaboration among Connecticut’s community colleges and partner universities to provide seamless career pathways for students to earn certificates, associate of science and bachelor of science degrees in engineering and technology disciplines with no loss of credit upon transfer, as well as preparing students for the workforce.
