Tunxis Community College will offer the following non-credit professional development courses in September for working professionals who must fulfill continuing education requirements. •  APPROVED CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR P2 and J2  PLUMBERS: Fri., Sept. 13; Sat., Sept. 21, or Mon., Sept. 30., 8 a.m.-1:15 p.m. This one-day course fulfills requirements for maintaining a plumbers license and is approved by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. Gray water recoveries, NFPA 58, rainwater harvesting, combustion air, state regulations, OSHA and other topics are covered. The class, which costs $85, is held at Tunxis@Bristol, 430 Main Street in Bristol.

MINDFULNESS FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS: Sat., Sept. 21, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. This workshop teaches health care professionals how to practice mindfulness so that they can be more focused providers in a rapidly changing, emotional and often stressful environment. Mindfulness can improve effectiveness, overall organizational productivity, and help health care professionals connect with their patients while increasing positive emotions and self-compassion. Mindful meditation, present moment awareness, stress management, mindful communication, body scan, and handling strong emotions are among the topics that will be covered.

Instructor Sharon Gutterman, Ph.D., teaches mindfulness practices to medical students, allied health professionals, and physicians at Yale University, University of Connecticut Medical Center, and The Ohio State University. She trained in the highly successful Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program developed and taught by Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli. The course costs $85, and participants will receive 4 CEUs.
